The lion is without a doubt one of the ‘Romanesque animals’ par excellence. The lion symbolized Christ and also protected against evil. These animals are to be seen in different poses on corbels: wearing a collar and tied to a block, turned to look directly at us or fighting with a serpent.

Occasionally, lions can also be found with their little heads ‘sticking out’ through geometric motifs adorning corbels like that below. Also to be seen in the photos below: an unusual corbel decorated with chequer ornament, another with little ornamental motifs, and another decorated with a pine cone.

Some corbels depict human figures, like the large contortioned figure below. Different animals are also represented, either the whole animal or the animal head (protome).
